The world itself was speckled with a smattering of ramshackle villages scraping together what they could, hints of a society laid low by self-wrought apocalypse. No way! Oceanhorn 2 's art style resembles BOTW. Hell, even the main character, the silent protagonist Hero, looks like Link in BOTW with his blonde hair, blue tunic, and sword and shield in tow. The equivalence is truly uncanny here! If BOTW is all about exploring, losing yourself in a world and uncovering random events along the way, then RDR2 definitely embodies that.
Sable eschews the physics-driven combat, crafting system, and high stakes of Breath of the Wild , for a quieter, more personal adventure—and it works beautifully.
Despite its sparse gameplay systems, which consist almost entirely of light platforming, Sable manages to craft a gorgeous world worth exploring. Silent hero Wander channels Link as he raises his sword towards the sky, a beam of light leading to the next challenge. Sure, there is a sequel on the way , but we know very little about it right now. About Kotaku Store. By Jeremy Winslow.
List slides. Darksiders was an admirable attempt at trying to capture the magic of 3D Zelda , but ripping off The Legend of Zelda wholesale does this game more harm than good, especially considering how well-defined the core identity is.
And for the worst at that. The second game is a bit better, but Darksiders really is just discount Zelda at the end of the day. A PlayStation 3 exclusive, 3D Dot Game Heroes is almost something of a parody of the original Legend of Zelda , but at the end of the day it becomes very clear the game is more of a love letter. It honors the original Zelda in every way it can, constantly referencing the game. At the same time, it has its own mechanics that keep the game highly addictive. Almost aggressively so.
Thanks to a host of aggressively unfriendly mechanics thirst, weapon durability, and procedural generation , this is a hard game to go back to. Worse yet, despite this being a Level 5 game, the story is a complete and utter mess. The script is a disaster, the localization is even worse, and Dark Cloud 2 is just so much better, that most players will want to drop the first game the moment they hit their first roadblock. But to me, the darker story and aesthetic represents a departure from the lighthearted and colorful fun of the Zelda series, and the motion controls of the Wii version are a bit unwieldy though this issue is not present in the GameCube release.
This sequel to the esteemed Ocarina of Time has become a classic in its own right. Plus, it brought us one of the most fun Super Smash Bros. This is the true OG of Zelda games, the one that spawned the series.
For that reason alone, The Legend of Zelda has undoubtedly changed the lives of countless gamers far and wide. With its iconic opening scene, its narrative innovation, and its amazing replay value, the original Zelda title deserves its high position on this list.
Oh man, this is getting hard, guys. All of the remaining games have a solid argument for the greatest game of all time. This was the first Zelda game I ever played, and by far the best of the top-down entries in the series. The world is immersive and detailed, and every dungeon pushes you to your limit while being eminently beatable for players who are willing to put in the work.
While puzzles are an important element of almost every Zelda game, the entire world is the puzzle in Breath of the Wild.
With nearly infinite replay value and truly breathtaking graphics, Breath of the Wild will go down as one of the greatest games of all time. The first three-dimensional Zelda title is also one of the best.
Ocarina of Time innovated many of the gameplay elements that have made subsequent three-dimensional Zelda games some of the most well-received titles ever. And on top of its awesome gameplay and beautiful soundtrack, Ocarina of Time has become one of the most popular speedrunning titles, leading to some truly zany and entertaining strategies. I might get some flack for putting this one on top of my list, but The Wind Waker is a perennial classic, destined to withstand the test of time better than any other Zelda game.
